Are Language Classes for me?
Let's face it. Not everyone is excited to go back to school, sit in a classroom and do what the teacher says. Luckily, in todays digital world you can find traditional in-person classes as well as online ones. That way, every student of the Luxembourgish language can choose what the most fitting method.
Advantages of In-Person Classes
Learning a new language happens best through interaction with other people.
1. Human Contact
In a class, you directly interact with the teacher as well as with your classmates. The immersion is much higher than behind your screen and the numebr of distraction are much less.
2. Build new friendships
For the duration of a course, you see the same people during every class. Together you wait that the class starts, interact in the class and work together, and exit the class together. You might even share the bus back together. Those are important times that will allow you to have new contacts and maybe make new friends. Learning together is more motivating and more fun.
Advantages of Online Classes
Online classes are more fitting in some cases:
1. Learn at your own pace
Most online course are video-based and allows you to follow the course at your own pace. You can repeat exercice and explanations as many times as necessary. Whether you are a slow or fast learner, you can work at your speed.
2. No location nor time constraints
Online classes can be done at any moment and at any time. No need to take a bus or drive a car, today, online classes can be watched on your mboile devices. Wherever you are, if you ahve some time, you can tune in and continue your lessons.
Disadvantage of In-Person Classes
In-Person classes, despite offering a good learning experience, can be vary in quality and prize. There are a few points to consider before registering to a course:
1. Commitment
The number one reason, people quit a course is often due to low commitment. Being late or skipping a class can lower your motivation. Sometimes, you can't make it to a class due to factors out of your control. Unfortunatly, the class does not wait for you and you lose a week's progress.
2. Not the right teacher for you
Every teacher has their own teaching style. You might learn better with teacher A than with teacher B. In an in-person class, the teacher is assigned to your group and you often can't choose who that person will be.
3. Quality of the class
The other students in the class are as important as the teacher. How many students are there with you? Are the students motivated and energetic? Those factors can have a huge impact of how much you will learn and enjoy going to class.
4. Rush to register
When joining an in-person course, you have to regsiter in time in order to be able to choose the group and time-slot that fits you. With popular courses, people rush to register and more often than not, you will find yourself out of options.
Disadvantage of Online Classes
As much as online classes are easy to access, they also have several disadvantages:
1. Less Human Contact
Interacting through an online platform with the teacher or other students often leads to more friction. Not everyone have their webcam open and this can add an even higher level of disconnect.
2. Drop rate
Even tough you can follow at your own pace, online classes have the highest drop rate among schools. The combination of a digital barrier and the ease to connect/disconnect leads to students dropping out very easily. With in-person classes, you have to show up on time.
